Mezzo-soprano Dr. Marie Bird is known for her energized performing, teaching, and research endeavors.

Dr. Bird is an advocate for both classical and

nonclassical vocal styles. She maintains an active performance schedule in which she performs cabaret, opera, art song, musical theater, jazz, and pop repertoire across the New Mexico and West Texas regions. Dr. Bird has performed with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Taos Opera Institute, Amarillo Opera, Red River Lyric Opera, Seagle Music Festival, and Orvieto Musica festival in Italy. Some of her most noteworthy roles have been Prince Orlofsky in Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus and the Witch in Sondheim’s Into The Woods.​​

Dr. Bird is also a mindfulness specialist and mental health advocate. She has completed MBSR or Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction training through the University of Massachusetts Medical School Center for Mindfulness and Mental Health First Aid training through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing. Dr. Bird uses mindfulness exercises like box breathing, mediation, body scans, and yoga to help her students with performance anxiety and self-doubt. Dr. Bird continues to perform research in mindfulness and help performers with their anxiety both on and off the stage.

 

​Dr. Bird received her vocal training from Texas Tech University (Doctor of Musical Arts, 2022), the University of Alabama (Master of Music, 2019), and Florida State University (Bachelor of Music, 2016). She is part of the voice faculty at Eastern New Mexico University where she teaches applied voice lessons, Class Voice, Fundamentals of Theory, and Stagecraft for Singers.

Midland College, Adjunct Professor of Voice

Applied voice instruction in classical, musical theater, and commercial music styles for undergraduate voice majors and non-majors. Voice instruction and outreach for non-college students of all ages. 

Coronado High School, Vocal Coach

All-State TMEA music preparation for all voice types. Applied voice instruction. Coached the Musical Theatre production. Diction coaching, and Solo and Ensemble preparation.

Texas Tech University, Instructor of Record

Applied voice instruction for eight to ten undergraduate voice majors, theater majors, and non-majors. Taught English Diction and Introduction to IPA instruction for undergraduates, as well as Italian Diction instruction for undergraduates.

Eastern New Mexico University, Assistant Professor of Voice

Applied voice instruction for undergraduate vocal majors, musical theatre minors, and non-majors. Stagecraft (opera workshop), theory, and class voice instructor.
